21-12-02 Rimex Metals Ltd, Brimsdown Industrial Estate. A brief summary of events this year. A pair of Pied Wagtails nested in one of our stacks of packing cases and reared 4 young. 5 goldfinches feeding on thistle seeds in our yard. A pair of wood pigeons nested in a crevice under our roof beams and reared 3 young. The house sparrow flock attracted to our feeders peaked at 35 late August. The current number is 12. It was 13 until Friday 20th Dec when we were treated to the spectacle of a sparrowhawk devouring one hapless specimen right outside the office window. Nothing special but bearing in mind our location may be of some interest. - Dave Wadley
Nazeing:

LVP Bittern Watchpoint Fishers Green. Two bitterns visible most of the afternoon. Smaller one had been seen all morning apparently, when, about 1p.m. larger one arrived in central reedbed and drove the smaller one out into left-hand fringe. Throughout the afternoon, every time the smaller one tried to re-emerge from the side, the other would race across the reedbed and drive it back. Finally, just before 4, the central one disappeared, and was then probably the one seen climbing to the very top of the reed to roost. Also seen in the afternoon at least 2 water rails, kingfisher and weasel. Very interesting afternoon. Jeff Butcher

Mon 16-12-02 Whipps Cross: Amazingly, a red throated diver flew over the house this evening at 1520 from the south east as I watched the gulls pass. It crossed the common at about 80m. and circled above Hollow pond for half a minute or so, seemingly unsure about what to do. It then made off east but quickly returned and resumed flying fast to and fro above the pond. It then lost height and appeared to be landing though trees screened any further view.  Peter Hadrill

Fri 13th Forty Hall,
Nrth Enfield.Birds definitely mob handed today....fantastic din with virtually every bird in the woods at Forty Hall getting involved with mobbing, firstly, a very fed up
Tawny Owl who eventually gave up and took off, and secondly, later on a Sparrow Hawk, who seemed to sneer and flapped carelessly away. Female Goosander giving superb fishing display where the fish leapt out of the water in an effort to get away from her beak. She did get a large one which nearly choked her getting it down. Kingfisher(s) fishing under the rhodedendrums. Usual crowd there Jays, Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Tree Creepers, Great, Blue, Long Tailed and Coal Tits, Goldcrests.. Kind regards Mick Nagle

Andrew,    Well you did ask for pics of the RTD on Wanstead  pond - they are dreadful as I said, but with a little imagination they do more or less prove it - one too far away, one flying off and the close-up looks more like a Yellow-billed but sadly its not. I'm not sure what you can do with them. I must remember my specs. next time. Best wishes - Bob Vaughan.......surely the right-hand image is by V.van Gogh? Andy

3-4pm, one 1st winter Mediterranean gull in roost. At 3.48pm heard two waders giving soft & short calls (not dunlin), then saw them flying low over the water near the causeway & then twice flew (and called) 20ft in front of me before going south. 'Martin' size, very small bills, pale wingbars too faint for sanderling (& birds too small and not pale enough for this species), appeared to me to be two little stints - A Middleton
I was tempted to wonder how big is the current gull roost on KGV/WG Res? Yesterday I saw 2350 predominantly BHG pass over the house en route to the reservoirs in the hour before sunset and wondered what percentage this constituted? - Best wishes, Peter Hadrill (Whipps Cross)
Other timed counts from other approaches to the valley reservoir roosts would be of interest. Andy

Yesterday (01.12.02) there was a Red-throated Diver on Heronry Pond, Wanstead Park ! I first saw it at about 11.30 and it eventually flew off in the direction of Perch pond (the golfers pond) at 2:45. It wasn't doing much fishing - the pond has been dry for many years so I doubt there's many fish, but it sat around, swam a bit and dived occasionally. It flew only once other than to fly off, from the kiosk end to the other end of the pond and belly-flopped rather sloppily. I assumed it was a juvenile, at one time head on, a very faint reddish throat patch was visible, but it was grey and white overall with a well spotted back and fairly clean head so perhaps it was an adult. I have some (very bad) pictures. I haven't been able to check Perch Pond or others since. Also a few siskin. - Bob Vaughan ~ Past records - one on the 'basin' Wanstead Park Jan 1877, one shot there March 1890 - Epping Forest through the eye of the Naturalist (Essex Field Club 1992) - any more

Sun 1st Dec Valentines Park. Plenty of starlings about in the park and around, flock of 100+ came over the house heading south. 4 m pochard and 2 shoveller pairs on the lake. B Miller
Sewardstone:
Good Numbers of Redwing and Fieldfare, also 1 siskin over. Had two chiffchaffs, one watched for ten minutes feeding and preening in scrub at the western end of the tarmac road by Knights pits. It was very grey looking and washed out, pale greyish below, the only hints of green were in the tertials and faintly in the primaries. It was calling frequently, giving a typical "hueet" call. Perhaps a candidate for abietinus? or maybe just a very greyish collybita. (these are purely my thoughts on the bird, given the views that I got, and I make no claims towards being certain of what it is) R.Cope
Harold Hill garden, firecrest seen twice during the afternoon - Colin Jupp

Just to update you on my Bittern work. Bitterns have been located at the Bittern watchpoint (3), Pochard hide (3 today), Amwell (1) and Rye Meads (1). At the Pochard hide one has a bad right foot, it trails it slightly in flight, and this bird flew to the watchpoint reedbed at 1230 today. It is distinctive so keep an eye out for it. The Rye Meads bird has a secondary feather missing on the right wing. If you see any Bitterns away from the watchpoint please let me know.
Thanks. Alan Harris

At Amwell toaday: 2 Jack Snipe and 1 Cetti's Warbler. I noticed comments about the state of Amwell and an explanation may be useful.  The gravel company has decided to pass the management of the site to the Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust for a period of  4 Years.  This followed increasing problems on site between the conservation volunteers and the Amwell Magna fishery (the river).  In July the gravel company asked the volunteers to cease activities on site.  The habitats at Amwell have been maintained by voluntary effort for many years, the current situation of uncut vegetation and lack of management is as frustrating to the volunteers as it is to visitors. The involvement of the Trust is a positive move and it is hoped that they will resume work parties as soon as possible. - Graham White
