Thanks to all of the RMRG members who gave up their days ringing to help with the access and controlling the crowds particularly AH, Sarah, and Jeroo. Also thanks to the RSPB who also did an excellent job (most of Sunday) particularly Vicky and Carol and a number of other volunteers. Also, thanks to all the birders who were all very well behaved. The odd silly and irate comment (which under the circumstances when you are waiting at a gate in that state of panic were probably expected!!) were all dealt with in the spirit. This type of thing gives you sleepless nights but all went very well thanks to the good organisation and well behaved birders. At present estimates of people who saw the bird probably run well over 1000, cash raised will go towards the RSPB for conservation work on the reserve and the Rye Meads Ringing Group to fund their studies on the site.   Finally thanks to Tringa solitaria for turning up on a Friday night and going at Sunday lunchtime much better than the middle of the week when arranging access is impossible!   Paul Roper

Hi all - Just a quick note to inform you that there is an Open Day at Rainham Marshes on Saturday 21st September from 11am to 4pm.  This will be the first chance for most people to see how the new RSPB Reserve is coming on.  Access will be off of Tank Hill Road, Purfleet.  There will be on site refreshment (including a hog roast) as well as other local conservation bodies including the East London Birders Forum and the Essex Birdwatching Society.   With any luck there should be some birds as well!   All the best   If you have any questions do not hesitate to get in touch. In the meantime I shall endeavour to obtain more info. Check out the following site. http://www.rainhammarshes.org.uk/ Howard Vaughan - Essex County Recorder

Nick Sampford's pic today of Purple Emperor and a freshly laid free-range white admiral egg on honeysuckle up the tree

Hi all - while waiting and watching for purple emperor this morning there was a comotion going in a sallow, we finally track down the culprit, it was a species of monkey. Descripton: tall possible 6 foot 3, slender built, blondish hair, nearly naked, I've attached pictures hoping anybody out there could help with the id of this rather strange creature. Had me puzzled   nick s
Reply > definitley a lower primate spp related to the lemurs - the pale lower limbs show it inhabits the under story and the sandals show retro of about 20years. This spp should only be approached with the latest edition of invertebrates anon
Regarding the observation of presumed egglaying activity by a white admiral, there was a serious purpose in climbing the tree to examine the honeysuckle in situ. We have spent a fair while trying to find caterpillars of white admiral so that we could say for sure to woodland managers which kind of honeysuckle growth (eg shaded or edge) was being used in Herts, rather than just repeat what is in the books. In this case it appeared from the ground that 5-6 eggs were laid, but on climbing the tree, it was found that only one egg had been laid - it could have been that none was laid if the female found the site to be unsuitable. Now we have a little more confirmed information to help those who manage our woods.

Broxbourne Wood NR, a female Purple Emperor seen extremely well on two occasions on the main ride from the West carpark shortly after 3:00 and seen until around 3:20pm. It was first seen at about 2:45pm by two others (Martin Shepherd and Jeremy Gaskell) who alerted me to the fact that they were pretty sure that they had had a brief sighting - Toby Austin, passed on by Liz Goodyear - see full details on Herts and Middx BC
Some comments from Jeremy Gaskell. Martin and I were walking along when M. 'kicked a white admiral' from the track which landed further along. Jeremy got his camera out to take a close up of it, got down and close then realised it had a slight purple sheen above and orange eyespot below, but in his amazement at seeing a male purple emperor he failed to click the shutter before it flew. Then on settled views the next one appeared to be a worn female, and the next a rather fresh female - so Jeremy is fairly happy with a count of two or three. He was just rather shocked to have had success and nearly passed over the first one as a white admiral!
