Last week, water vegetation photographed on the bank behind a fishing station - image includes 3 disappointed visitors from Luton, hoping for a small red-eyed damselfy sighting - A Middleton and Graham Warman. LVP information is that the lack of weed this year may be due to 'cyclical weed growth'. Of course, enquiries are best directed to the actual managers of the site, the LVRPA. Tony Gray had a meeting with LVP there this pm, LVP Conservation Officer not present, and there appears to be no strategy (that Tony is aware of) for maintaining the 'small red-eyed' population at Knights Pits, despite the LVP having a Biodiversity Action Plan.
A biodiversity strategy for SRE, at its only known LV site, may be available from Tim Hill (LVP Conservation Officer), or Roger Cole, but I doubt it involves the persistent removal of this species' habitat - AM

8 & 9 August 2001   Rye Meads - After 7pm on 8/8/01 two more Little Egrets were discovered at Rye Meads, making a total of 3! Two were seen on the evening of the 9/8/01, but the third was not extensivly searched for so could still be present. The birds are frequenting a part of the site which has no public access although have been seen elsewhere in the Rye Meads area.   If the birds are present on Saturday the Ringing Group will arrange access and escort people on to the site to see the birds if they are viewable. Any one wishing to see them should wait by the cottages on the toll road from 12 o'clock on Saturday and members of the ringing group will regularly check and escort people to view throughout the afternoon until 5pm. - Paul Roper RMRG

Wed 8-8-01 Rye Meads Little Egret still present. 40 Lapwing, 3 Snipe, 5 Green Sandpipers inc. one colour ringed in Jan 1997. Whilst not old, it has not been seen at Rye Meads since March 1998. Has it been in the valley or else where? If any one is looking at Green Sandpipers please check any colour ring combinations. The colour rings are above the tarsus, so they should be viewable if the birds are wading in shallow water, but not up to their belly. Please record where the bird is, date, time, and how many Green Sandpipers are present. These can be e-mailed directly to me at paul@qenpbo.freeserve.co.uk I will return details of when birds were ringed originally and any other sightings of the particular individual.

Tue 7-8-01 Little Egret in the Rye Meads area - various people
Hi all, Just had a call from an old workmate in Waltham Abbey, he and his family have seen and caught a male Brown Hairstreak (nectaring on bramble) in one of the 10 KM squares where I found them in the 80's. Is anyone else looking for them or Silver-washed Frits. in Epping Forest area or do you all just read the "expert" opinions of book authors? The area around the M25 north of London is still very rich (possibly a little better for some species since the M25 was built) but under recorded. Has anyone in the group actively looked for the above species or Purple Emperor in the area? Please let me know what you have found, feel free to be vague about site details or just give a county or 10KM square - Martin Catt - Martin Catt (Get out and carefully check all those massive blackthorn hedges we have - Andy)
21-7-1995 a female brown hairstreak nectaring on bramble in TQ39 - Andrew Middleton (this sighting was discounted by the author who regards the Purple Emperor as extinct in Herts, London and Kent - see photos and reports on Herts and Middx Butterfly Conservation site to the contrary). Sun 5-8-01 Small-red-eyed damselfly - from 28th July to 4th August, Colin Jupp has recorded SRED at 6 sites in 5 tetrads in the 10 Km sq - TQ59 (Metropolitan Essex). He has spent many hours searching for the species in the area during the recent good weather, and has had double figure counts at 3 sites, often with very large numbers of Red-eyeds. More excitingly, Colin has seen paired insects, including a number of ovipositing females, at a total of 3 sites. I've seen the species at 2 sites myself on 29th July, & Alan Hamilton at 3 sites on 1st August, including telescope  views. We have checked Fairlop & had no joy but there has proved to be a very healthy population of emerald damselflies & good numbers of ruddy darters on the site- Alan Bell.
Monday 6th - Colin tells me that many of the sites are private, but that the species can be seen at Bedfords Park, nr Haverring-atte-Bower, a public site. Numbers here are relatively high, perhaps 1 in 20 'red-eyeds' are 'small'. Also, Colin saw a male downy emerald on 30th May at Priors GC - 5+ miles from the Epping Forest site
