Peanuts and aflotoxin contamination There is apparently a worlwide shortage of "safe" peanuts for feeding to birds because of poor harvest and high levels of aflotoxin contamination. CJ Birdfood has withdrawn peanuts from its catalogue (although it currently has a limited supply). The RSPB is also warning that stocks could run out during the winter. My concern is that this information should be made as widely available as possible, so that people who may buy their peanuts from market stalls, pet shops or other outlets can ask if the nuts have been tested and not buy from dodgy sources. Otherwise, well meaning people may be killing more birds than they help - Joy Park

I spent the morning at the coppiced clearing in Hoddesdonpark Wood photographing White Admirals. There were plenty of them there but the only count I could offer is that I saw four in the air at once - all other sightings may have been duplicates. In the event I did not take many shots because the ones that were obliging were also quite tatty. This afternoon I went to Hertford Heath to photograph grasshoppers and to look for White Admiral in Balls Wood. I saw one but there were two guys there who were confident of six sightings earlier in the day - John Stevens

Ponders End Thought that you might like to know that earlier this week the wildlife rescue group that I am involved with took into care two young (14 days?) gulls that were rescued by workmen from the roof of a factory on an industrial estate in Lincoln Road - the roof was being replaced. The birds are quite certainly either Herring or L B-backed but are too young to be identified with certainty. I had heard rumours that "large gulls" were breeding on factory roofs in Brimsdown so the breeding in Lincoln Road is probably no surprise, given the regular numbers of both species on Ponders End Lake in spring and summer - John Stevens (and a few lesser bb gulls generally flying around Ponders End all summer, and one seen foraging far out to sea in Tescos car-park)
