30/8/99 Long Running, n/e of Wake Arms roundabout, Epping Forest - one male black darter holding territory by the unfenced pond at the north end of the cattle enclosure - John Stevens
(The status of black darter in Essex seems to be that of a scarce breeding species in Epping Forest from the distant past, with rare forest sightings in recent decades thought to be of wandering or migrant insects. I think the pond itself has been made by the conservators in just the last few years, and the site is being managed with cattle to promote the heathland habitat which used to be widespread in the forest. This positive management with its fences etc has not been welcomed by all, but its conservation value is evident. Long Running has now attracted two typical heathland species of dragonfly in 1999 - black darter and keeled skimmer - which seem to have never been seen in Essex outside the forest - ref Benton in The Dragonflies of Essex 1988, and other information)
