| Highbury, by the Arsenal stadium -
My dad (Peter) was outside (playing footie) when he saw a
bird which he believed was a Buzzard. He
called me out and asked me to bring the
binos. After looking at the bird through the
binos we could tell it wasn't a Common but wasn't unlike
a Honey Buzzard but they do not come back untill May. Can
you shine some light on the situation. Thanks -
Christopher Langsdon Roy W suggests Osprey as a possibility and a Rough-legged Buzzard might also enter the equation - ID depends on how good the views were, ie head, wing and tail patterns, shape etc. difficult! We ruled Osprey, Rough Legged and Kite. It didn't appear to be a harrier. The bird was very high up and even through the bins we could make out no clear marking. Think it was about 5:20-5:30 and it was flying north. Christpher Langsdon Goldfinch in my dad's garden in Ware - Nick Sampford >>>> |

| Spring is in
the air and Mrs & Mr Rook are
rearranging the twigs at the top of their tree. If
anyone gets the urge to count the number of nests at
their local rookery this year, or any others they find
themselves passing, I would be very grateful to get the
results. The enclosed table lists all the Essex
rookeries I know about, and there are lots of blanks in
the 2002 column just waiting to be filled in. If
you find a rookery not on the list, I would also be
grateful for a grid reference. Thanks Stephen Harris 18.3.02 Essex Rooks 2002 Zipped Word

yellowhammers and 12 red-legged partridge - Andrew
Middleton The LVP will be attempting to get some idea of the number of Bitterns present in the park by getting volunteers to stake out as many of the reedbeds as possible, until dark, on Saturday afternoon / evening. This has been arranged at short notice to coincide with a visit from Gillian Gilbert (RSPB Bittern monitoring), who will be checking whether any of the bitterns in the valley are radio tagged birds from Minsmere. If anyone would like to assist, volunteers meet at the rangers base at Abbey Mills at 2.30pm, splitting up to cover the reedbeds in the central area. appreciate records sent direct (perhaps email recorder
