2.30 pm Turkey Street / Hertford Road, large raptor harassed by gulls /crows, at least third bigger than attackers, pale underneath and wing tips point upwards when gliding, most likely buzzard but no bins and looked a bit small and smart, anybody else see this headed N/E .
        Brian Dawton.

Highbury, by the Arsenal stadium - My dad (Peter) was outside (playing footie) when he saw a bird which he believed was a Buzzard.   He called me out and asked me to bring the binos.   After looking at the bird through the binos we could tell it wasn't a Common but wasn't unlike a Honey Buzzard but they do not come back untill May. Can you shine some light on the situation. Thanks - Christopher Langsdon
Roy W suggests Osprey as a possibility and a Rough-legged Buzzard might also enter the equation - ID depends on how good the views were, ie head, wing and tail patterns, shape etc. difficult!
We ruled Osprey, Rough Legged and Kite. It didn't appear to be a harrier. The bird was very high up and even through the bins we could make out no clear marking. Think it was about 5:20-5:30 and it was flying north. Christpher Langsdon

Goldfinch  in my dad's garden in Ware - Nick Sampford >>>>

Spring is in the air and Mrs & Mr Rook are rearranging the twigs at the top of their tree.  If anyone gets the urge to count the number of nests at their local rookery this year, or any others they find themselves passing, I would be very grateful to get the results.  The enclosed table lists all the Essex rookeries I know about, and there are lots of blanks in the 2002 column just waiting to be filled in.  If you find a rookery not on the list, I would also be grateful for a grid reference.   Thanks   Stephen Harris 18.3.02 Essex Rooks 2002 Zipped Word document 18.5kb

Just a reminder that records still need to be sent to recorders (I've nearly finished mine - must remember to move away from this corner of Middx, Herts and Essex before next year's are due). This website might be OK for casual instant records, but it's not meant to replace long-term recording and reports - I'm sure recorders still need and appreciate records sent direct (perhaps email recorder for desired record format):
Steve Connor London Natural History Society Middx ~
Steve.Connor1@btinternet.com
Stephen Harris LNHS Essex ~
sharris@leytone15.fsnet.co.uk - The website is a good resource for recorders and contains much information from many observers who would not otherwise be contributing to the data on birds using sites in our area.  But traditional records are also needed as these are likely to cover the more common birds as well as contain breeding data, less likely to be posted on the website. - Thanks - Stephen Harris
