It would appear that there are two White B H Gulls in the valley at present. The normal one that is at Rye Meads and has a ring (of scandinavian origin) is pure white but has a gingery wash on the primarys.  Another bird seen further down the valley is pure white and has black wing tips, is this the bird seen last week? This bird was seen swimming only so we do not know if it has a ring. When looking at white B H Gulls would people please note the wing tips (black or ginger) and note if the bird is ringed (if possible). If both birds have rings the one with the black tips has not been read in the field and would be worth attempting. It would be interesting if both birds were from the same area or even the same brood!!   Paul Roper

Turnford & Cheshunt Pits. 3 male + 3 female Goosanders, a large flock of about 120 siskins, Chiffchaff & Treecreeper.   Holyfield Hall Farm. A white Black-headed Gull with a flock of over 1000 BHG's, and perhaps 100 Common Gulls feeding on the farmland. Not a true albino, as the bare part colours were normal and there was a small black spot behind the eyes, but otherwise the plumage (including the primaries and underwings) appeared all white. Size and structure were typical of BHG (if anything this bird was slightly smaller than most), seen at a distance, especially in flight this bird could easily be mistaken for a Med. A10/M25 area Just noted your count of Lapwing and Golden Plover on the web site.   I did a count Friday 4/1/01 and on the two fields where the birds normally get there were 1000 Lapwing and 500 Golden Plover.   The numbers here vary considerably through the winter and I think they are birds which move from the Amwell area and possibly even the St Albans area.   Anyone who wants to do a count needs to look at two fields. The one opposite the Little Chef on the A10 and also the next field up (North). This can be viewed from the lay by just over the roundabout as you head north. This field has been ploughed (and is most years) so accurate counts can normally only be done when birds are in flight. I have found that birds come in or leave both ways around dawn and dusk.
