19-3-00 RYE Meads chiff chaff Sunday morning a Chiffchaff was re-trapped at Rye Meads, this bird was ringed in August last year and not re-trapped at Rye Meads this winter. (interestingly this bird also had a sticky pollen residue on its forehead indicating it had been feeding on plants which are more advanced in spring development and much further south - possibly Mediterranean) This most probably indicates that this is a returning summer migrant. It is very difficult to prove at present when the wintering Chiffchaffs leave and the summer migrants return, there is probably a big overlap which varies each year dependant on weather etc. It is therefore probably not wise to assess wintering Chiffchaff numbers after 10th March or possibly even earlier.   Paul Roper

. One pale bird which could be mistaken for "tristis", when seen next to the green normal P.c.collybita. Pale bird is cold brown above, has a cream supercillium, but appears plain faced due to pale and not dark lores. Supercillium although cream is not very wide in front of eye and does not extend very far behind eye.Call was normal Chifchaff and due to the sunshine went in to song and Chiffchaffed a couple of times. Underparts pale creamy, however, close inspection reveals very faint yellow streaking in upper throat and on undertail coverts. Legs very black. In my view this bird was almost certainly a P.c. abietinus  and not P.c tristis. Unfortunately seen from distance or briefly this bird would most certainly be claimed as  "tristis" type.   70 Acres 1 LEO   Between Hall Marsh and Holyfield at least 5 other normal Chiffchaffs.   Holyfield 4 Ruddy Duck, 2 Smew, 4 Goosander - Paul Roper
